Legal-Aid Group Ordered to Pay $2.2-Million for Allegedly Duping ...

October 17, 2012, 10:42 am

A New Jersey judge has ordered a nonprofit legal-aid charity and its founder to pay $2.2-million for allegedly soliciting payments from prison inmates but doing little or no work for them, reports The Star-Ledger of Newark.

The order entered last week in Essex County Superior Court also bars Bruce Buccolo, of West Orange, N.J., and his organization, the Project Freedom Fund, from offering legal services in the state.

The court acted after Mr. Buccolo and the charity failed to respond to a complaint filed last year by the New Jersey attorney general?s office alleging that the fund charged inmates and their families $350 fees for legal consultations but rarely performed any services of value in return.

Mr. Buccolo?denied the accusations in an interview with The Star-Ledger last year, saying, ?There?s no scam here.? The newspaper could not reach him for comment on the court order.

Popular Ways to Learn Internet Marketing - Business Directory listings

True enough, change is the only constant thing in this world. Just as obsolete ideas are replaced so as old processes and ways of doing things are changed. The technological developments plus the arrival of the internet has made it possible for people to thrive in certain industries without necessarily have to establish a brick-and-mortar business.

This is mostly true among entrepreneurs. Those who wanted to make it big in his/her field must learn to get a grip of the changes. And one of which is in terms of establishing presence not just offline but in the world wide web as well.

To effectively reach a wider audience, internet marketing is considered to be a necessity for every entrepreneur. Because the establishment of websites is nothing without significant traffic, successful entrepreneurs have learned to invest well their time and money in learning about internet marketing. If you?re a newbie, don?t feel threatened with this fact as there are different ways on how you can learn about internet marketing:

1. Online internet marketing course

The popularity of internet marketing has paved way for many companies and individuals to offer different online internet marketing courses. Be warned though that not all are legit internet marketers. Some of these companies and individuals are actually scammers who are making these courses as an excuse to obtain money from people illegally. Thus, choose your provider wisely.

2. Look for a coach or mentor

For individuals who think that online courses are not for them can opt to hire a personal coach or mentor on internet marketing. The price may vary depending on the expertise and years of experience the mentor has. Just like with online courses, you have to consider a lot of things before settling for one.

3. Read and learn from other online resources

You don?t have to go far just look for other resources for internet marketing as you can find them in just a few clicks here and there. Other sources of information could be found in blogs, forums, eBooks, and podcasts.

If you?re looking for resources on how to earn money online, check out the The Internet Marketing blog. Its page, the How To Work From Home page has been one of the most popular pages in the website.

So my wife and I were clearing out an area of the house and came across an old box of mine. It was something I had thrown a lot of old high school and college stuff in indiscriminately. It had my year book, varsity letters, letters from my parents but also love letters from a couple girlfriends at the time.

My wife asked me why I kept the old love letters. My honest answer was because I didn't focus on throwing them out. What I mean is when i was moving out of my parents house many years ago, I just threw stuff in a box labeled mementos and then the box just got moved from house to house without really looking at it. I haven't even opened the box in over 10 years. I'm torn about throwing them out. I don't think my wife cares, but I didn't ask her either. Part of me doesn't see a point in keeping them, but also there's part of me that likes the memories.

Does anyone else keep things or not. Is there a difference between the letter from your parents your first week in college versus the "pointless" I love you letter from your girlfriend/boyfriend (pointless as in, one of many that you received over time)?

Curious about other peoples thoughts.

PS I think my wife would "like" me to throw some of it out (the ex thing) but I also think that if it was actually important to me, she'd completely accept it because she knows I'm not hung up on any previous relationships, it's just old mementos. She's not nostalgic and I can be a little bit.

Ex found pics of my first wife and one of the girlfriends I had between marriages. To be perfectly honest, I kept them because they were sentimental and I told her that.

Did I want to go start a new relationship with them? NO. I am kind of sentimental at times and like to stop and look at things. This might not be so good for me. This may be just the opposite of what my ex would do. I don't know. When I asked, she just said, "I don't think you should have them if they don't mean anything to you."

Come on now. If I was married to someone and had children with her. Doesn't she mean, something? She doesn't mean the world! My second wife meant the world! However, these others did mean something.

In the search for the right mate for me, I came pretty close one time. I saved her pic. Did she mean something to me? Yes. Did she mean the world to me? NO!

That is why I married YOU and NOT HER! YOU meant THE WORLD to me! Did I save them for the opportunity to hurt her? NO, NO, NO!
Why would I set myself up that way before we got married???

Wow, sometimes I get the same way. Convinced that anything can be true. I can't step back and realize someone is projecting. Sometimes my own failings get in the way. It's too bad.

Peace to you.

MTSU Honors College hosts Fulbright Scholar Howell Oct. 17

MTSU alumna and Fulbright Scholar Kaitlen Howell will discuss medical research she conducted during her 16-month stay in Munich, Germany, during a University Honors College public lecture this week.

Howell, a Murfreesboro resident, will make her presentation at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in Room 106 of the Paul W. Martin Sr. Honors Building. The public is invited.

While an MTSU undergraduate student, Kaitlen Howell, right, found a mentor in biology professor Dr. Gore Ervin, who answers her question in class. (MTSU file photo Andy Heidt)

Howell was awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award in 2010. She was chosen to study in Germany, which later awarded her a Fulbright internship that extended her stay.

The Fulbright U.S. Student program provides grants for individually designed study and research projects or English teaching assistantships for one academic year in a foreign country. Fulbright recipients will meet, work, live and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences.

Working primarily with cardiac arrest survivors, Howell will explain to attendees how many who suffer cardiac arrest and then receive CPR will experience a lack of oxygen to the brain, resulting in a coma.

During the course of her research, Howell examined test results of these patients and then challenged a supposed ?100 percent poor outcome? predictor.

Critical to her study, she says that patients with this marker still can improve, but people in intensive care units all around the world are being removed from life support within days of receiving CPR because these outcome predictors are present.

Through her address, Howell hopes to convey all the benefits that a study abroad can provide.

?Fulbright enriched my life in so many ways; professionally through research, but I also grew personally through the relationships I developed,? she said. ?It provided me an opportunity to show my own character and develop strengths that I didn?t even know I had.?

Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program is part of the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Fulbright gives selected students, teachers and scholars the opportunity to travel abroad to study, teach and research in more than 155 countries.

Coming home to the States this past March, Howell continues to work with her German research team preparing several papers for upcoming publication.

Passionate about education, she also tutors grade school through college students in math, biology, chemistry, physics, English and German language skills.

?I love learning and I love sharing that knowledge with others,? Howell explained.

Participating in mentoring programs, Howell works with young girls and foster youth one-on-one, embracing every chance to invest in others through guidance and by telling her story.

Having spent much of her own childhood in the foster care system, Howell entered MTSU at a significant educational disadvantage. Through intense dedication she has proven that anything is possible with enough determination. Amid preparing for multiple speaking engagements and presentations and continuing her research and writing, Howell is applying for medical school.

MWN Blog: Comparing Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) and ...

The wireless industry, Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have begun disseminating Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) to cell phone users across the nation. ?The National Weather Service (NWS) will utilize WEA to push select extreme weather bulletins using this platform. ?WEA, also known as?Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) or Personal Localized Alerting Network (PLAN), is a national emergency alert system to send concise, text-like messages to users? WEA-capable mobile devices. ?Along with severe weather alerts, other messages that will be sent as Imminent Threat Alerts include natural disaster notices, such as in the event of an earthquake. ?In addition to Imminent Threat Alerts, AMBER Alerts will be sent via WEA, as well as Presidential Alerts.

WEA Basics

  • Users are automatically enrolled in the program, but can opt out of all alerts except Presidential Alerts
  • Alerts will only be sent to WEA-capable devices
  • Carriers representing 97% of cell phone users are represented, though many are beginning their roll-out to limited markets
  • Mobile users are NOT charged to receive these messages
  • Message will appear similar to text messages, though they utilize more robust delivery technology than traditional text messages that is not susceptible to network congestion
  • Alerts will arrive on your device with a distinct tone and vibration which is different from a standard text message
  • Alert messages will be sent to those within a targeted area (individual cell towers can be programmed to send a specific alert), unlike text messages which are not location aware
  • Though the messages are targeted, your location is not "tracked." An alert to a particular area will be delivered to all capable devices within that area, regardless of where the device originates or it's "home" area (i.e., someone from Boston traveling in Dallas will receive any severe weather alerts for Dallas while he is in the affected area)
  • Messages will be limited to 90?characters

Weather alerts sent via WEA

  • Tsunami Warning
  • Tornado Warning
  • Extreme Wind Warning
  • Flash Flood Warning
  • Hurricane Warning
  • Typhoon Warning
  • Blizzard Warning
  • Ice Storm Warning
  • Lake Effect Snow Warning
  • Dust Storm Warning

While this sounds like a direct (and free) competitor to Cirrus Weather Solutions StormWatch+ service, StormWatch+ actually has several distinct and important advantages over the WEA system. ?These are outlined below.

Benefits of StormWatch+ over WEA

  • Delivery method: WEA - SMS-like text message; StormWatch+ - Push notification with link to full-featured content in app
  • Weather alert types:? WEA?- Limited set of high-end warnings, no watches;? StormWatch+?- Expanded list of warnings, advisories, and watches
  • User selection of alerts:? WEA?- All on/off (except Presidential alerts);? StormWatch+?- User controls individual alert types, quiet time, and vacation stop
  • Opt-out method:? WEA?- Contact wireless carrier;? StormWatch+?- user-controlled
  • Location(s) monitored:? WEA?- current location only;? StormWatch+?- 3 user-defined locations anywhere in the U.S.
  • Area warned:? WEA?- entire county + "bleed over" if cell tower near county line;? StormWatch+?- Only within NWS warning polygon
  • Reliability -? WEA?- unknown;? StormWatch+?- proven based on extensive use in all weather types
  • Availability -? WEA?- multi-year rollout on newest devices only and in limited markets;? StormWatch+?- entire U.S.; all relatively recent iOS/Android devices
  • Additional content:? WEA?- none;? StormWatch+?- local radar, forecast, current conditions, video and textual safety tips, graphical depiction of warning + full text of the alert
