Samsung announces SmartStay and S Voice features for the Galaxy S III

In addition to announcing its newest flagship, the Galaxy S III, along with some nifty photo-sharing features, Samsung has just revealed two more human-friendly features that aim to further differentiate the phone on the software side. These include SmartStay, which cleverly keeps the display from timing out by using the front-facing camera to detect when you're looking at the screen. Meanwhile, S Voice ushers in voice commands, and is the closest thing we've seen to a Siri competitor since Apple introduced that feature on the iPhone 4S. And we have to say, though Android users have long been reveling in voice-activated dialing and Google searches, the list of possible use cases here is quite impressive. In addition to initiating calls, you can wake the phone, request songs, send emails and text messages, use the calendar app, adjust the volume, capture photos, snooze the alarm and inquire about the weather. For now, Samsung says this feature will support eight languages, including, among others, Spanish, German, Korean and American / British English. Still, we wouldn't put it past Samsung to teach the GS III a few more languages once it gets that whole "launching in 145 countries" thing out of the way.

'Twilight' A Best Kiss Four-Peat At MTV Movie Awards?

Twilight Tuesday predicts Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson will continue to rule category with their 'Breaking Dawn - Part 1' smooch.

Can you believe it's already movie awards season again? We're talking about the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, of course — one of our favorite times of the year.

The official nominees list is out and full of fun new additions in category, performance and movie form. As in the past three years, "Twilight" is nominated in two areas that the fan-favorite franchise has dominated: Best Kiss and Best Movie.

This week's Twilight Tuesday is all about analyzing what will go down live on the awards show Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, particularly with the history of "Twilight" and the Best Kiss category, which three-time winners Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson will likely continue to rule with their "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" smooch.

Their competitors this year are actually pretty fierce: Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone ("Crazy, Stupid, Love."), Rupert Grint and Emma Watson ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2"), Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson ("The Hunger Games"), and Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum ("The Vow").

Stiff competition or not, because Stewart and Pattinson have such a seriously dedicated fanbase and a great track record with both their Movie Awards appearances and award acceptances, we're betting the odds are in their favor. It all started back in 2009, when Stewart and Pattinson took home the golden popcorn for their first onscreen kiss as beloved characters Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. It was all about the art of the tease back then, as the two stars didn't actually kiss during their acceptance.

In 2010, they came back ready to play and treated fans to a wisp of a kiss after their win. Then, last year, Pattinson brought the house down when he stormed into the audience to plant a wet one on co-star Taylor Lautner.

We're not ones to count chickens before they hatch, but what might Stewart and Pattinson do this year if they win? Kiss other co-stars? Kiss each other and all of the Cullen family in attendance?

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.

Avengers showing postponed after projectionist accidentally deletes the entire film

The hottest film of the year vanished in an instant

From our experiences in movie theaters, moviegoers don't typically notice the hard work of the projectionist. They remain secluded in a room where they facilitate the steady stream of light and sound which the rest of us enjoy. Of course, if the enigmatic figure behind scenes mistakenly erases an entire digital film while dozens of critics wait for their chance to glimpse it, he or she becomes much more noticeable. That's exactly what happened during a recent press screening of the?hotly-anticipated?Avengers flick, and while the emergency was averted within a couple of hours, the incident serves to highlight just how flimsy our digital data really is.

In the gradual migration from traditional film reels to digital projection technology, viewers benefit from sharper images, less distortion, and ? usually ? better reliability. Unfortunately for the as-of-yet unnamed projectionist who was poised to give a number of critics and other entertainment press their first glimpse at one of the year's most anticipated films, the?Avengers film file went out with the digital trash.

According to?multiple tweets by?various members of the film press, the problem was corrected after about two hours, thanks to a relatively quick download from a distribution source. Of course, had the film been a more traditional 35mm tape version, there would have been little chance of such an issue occurring. I guess that's the price we pay for living in?the future.

Triggertrap: nine ways to activate your DSLR with an iOS device, choose one

triggertrap-remote-activated-dslr-iOS-app

When we first heard about the Kickstarter-funded Triggertrap, it was a nice but nichey lab instrument of a device that could fire your DSLR with diverse stimuli, like lights or ringing phones. It wasn't the first photo-tripping idea we'd seen, but at least it could be had for a fair sum ($75.00) and be used out of the box. But now, by connecting that tech to an app and charging $19.98 for both the software and hardware, Triggertrap might open up remote snapping to a lot more folks.

Running off any iPhone, iPad or iPod using iOS 5, the app uses a dongle which can be connected by cable or infrared to most DSLRs or advanced compacts. From there, you'll be able to use all of your iDevice's sensors as triggers, from motion through to facial recognition and even GPS. The app doesn't just fire the shutter, either -- it also gives you control over the focus and flash. And if you don't have a separate camera, the iPhone's built-in cam can be used instead -- which would save you from buying the $9.99 dongle, if you have the necessary accoutrements. So if you've been wondering how to get those hard-to-shoot images, or have more nefarious ideas, check the videos after the break.

The Diminishing Digital Divide

Concerns about the digital divide have started to take on a bit of hysterical edge?think along the lines of Reverend Lovejoy?s wife: ?But what about the children?! she would exclaim over every single slight change that threatened her sense of idyllacy. Make no mistake, however, there is more than ample reason to be concerned about the degree of access people have to technological resources, which includes equipment, information, and education. As technology becomes increasingly integrated with different?ahem, all?areas of our lives, not being connected can definitely present certain challenges with regard to information and services. These separations have been largely been aligned with age, education, and household income, but recent data from the Pew Internet & American Life Project report the digital divide is diminishing?thanks in part to the rise of mobile technologies.

While age, education, and household income are the strongest negative predictors for Internet use, access has become less of a limiting factor for non-Internet users. In the last decade, only 6% of this group have cited a lack of access as the main reason they don?t go online. (Instead, a primary reason cited by non-users for why they don?t log on is a belief the Internet isn?t relevant to their information or communication needs.) Access is now almost ubiquitous since almost every electronic gadget that goes to market needs to be able to connect to the Internet to some degree. From cell phones to MP3 players to game consoles to e-Readers and tablets, access to online content has moved beyond the bulky, stationary confines of a desktop computer.

Of the 88% of American adults who own a cell phone, 46% own a smart phone (Android, BlackBerry, iPhone). Smart phone adoption is high among the financially-well off, the well-educated, and adults under the age of 50, which are groups that are typically early tech-adopters. Race appears to remain an insignificant factor: Overall access and adoption rates have been consistently comparable for African-American and Latinos to the national average for all Americans. What is significant is that for a growing number of of people, cell phones and other gadgets represent their primary source of Internet access. For one-third of adults who primarily use their smart phone to go online, their device is their sole access to online resources?they do not have a high speed broadband connection.

So what are smartphone users doing with their phones?

You?ll note that making an actual old fashioned phone call doesn?t seem to have made the list. Instead, activities tend to lean toward the more ?social? sphere. Mobile users are going online, but they?re also creating new content and sharing that content from the palm of their hands.

The digital divide may be diminishing but what the Pew Internet & American Life Project has termed ?mobile differences? seems an extension of a second tier of the digital divide?an issue that extends beyond access, and relates more to digital literacy. If we?re being programmed to use the Internet in pre-programmed ?buckets? that take the shape of the apps we download to our smartphones, what do we lose in terms of critical thinking and understanding about the potential of the ?net?

I admit it: I have a bit of Mrs. Lovejoy in me. This has long been a topic of interest, and you can find extensive thoughts on the subject at www.anthropologyinpractice.com. Enter ?digital divide? in the search box?I can?t embed a link with the results here unfortunately.
